your life is boring.

your life is boring.

Athens, Greece, February 2010

I love old people and I someday want to love scotch. So when we were
on a walk in Athens, Greece and I spotted this man sitting in the sunlight, before a decanter of scotch, I was thrilled. And also intimidated. I didn’t want him to notice me or to disturb this scene, so I walked by and held the camera at my hip and took this photo. Seeing that the image was in focus and the composition was passable, I was pleased. It wasn’t until later examination that I noticed the graffiti tagged on the wall above him, “Your Life is Boring”. Being someone who is at times fearful of falling victim to complacency and comfort, I loved this photograph all the more. It speaks to the fact that so many of us have goals and ambitions that get swallowed by security and fear. But we also have to allow space for boredom; for our brains and minds and eyes and bodies to rest. We are arguably (or objectively) overstimulated as a culture and addicted to it. Sure, at times we all lead "boring" lives and as such we have a tendency to live vicariously through peoples' online feeds of manicured, sponsored, and "cropped" realities (and these perpetuators of false realities are a problem all their own). Life is full of unexpected thrills and also long seasons of draught and drabness and my personal goal in it all is to be able to navigate both with hope and expectation.
